1. How to prepare a REAL Turmat / REAL Field meal?
Tear off the top part of the package – use the upper notches.
Pour hot water (70–100°C) up to the indicated level on the side. Stir thoroughly, close the zip seal, and let sit for 8 minutes.*
(For muesli and Light Meal series, you can use cold water – it takes about 3 minutes.)
Stir once more and you're ready to eat. Enjoy your meal!
Tip: After preparation, you can shorten the packaging by tearing it at the lower notches – this makes it easier to eat from, especially if you don’t have a long spoon.
*Keep in mind that the preparation time increases as the air temperature drops. In very low temperatures, it may take up to 15 minutes. From experience, we know that in extreme cold, many people try to warm their hands with the pouch filled with hot water – if you decide to do this, be careful not to burn yourself. Also, be mindful of where you place the pouch while waiting for your meal.
2. How hot should the water be for preparing REAL Turmat / REAL Field meals?
For best results with soups and main dishes, the water should be between 70°C and 100°C. Breakfasts and light meals can be prepared with either hot or cold water.
In emergency situations, all meals can be safely prepared using cold water – the soaking time then increases from 8 to around 40–50 minutes.
3. Can I eat REAL Turmat / REAL Field meals dry if I don’t have access to water?
If necessary, you can eat the meal dry if you don’t have water on hand. It won’t harm your body, but the taste and texture will be inferior, and the full nutritional value won’t be absorbed.
4. How long can freeze-dried meals be stored?
Most REAL Turmat and REAL Field meals have a shelf life of up to 5 years from the date of production. Thanks to freeze-drying and airtight packaging, the food retains its full flavor, nutritional value, and safety – perfect for a backpack, emergency drawer, or pantry.
5. What is the difference between REAL Turmat and REAL Field meals?
REAL Turmat offers balanced meals ideal for everyday trips, trekking, or weekends in the mountains.
REAL Field was developed with more extreme conditions in mind – it’s a military line with increased calories, designed for durability and reliability when it matters most.
It’s worth remembering that calorie needs are an individual matter – they depend on your body and the type of activity you’re preparing for.
If you’re planning a larger order or simply want to choose meals suited to your needs – write to us! We’ll be happy to help. We have experience from our own expeditions and gladly share it – for free :)
6. Where do your products come from?
Our meals are made in northern Norway, in Tromsø. The producer is Drytech, a company specializing in freeze-dried food for many years, responsible for both the REAL Turmat and REAL Field lines. Everything is made locally – from local ingredients, with the harsh Nordic conditions in mind.
